What is a REAL ID-Compliant Driver's License?

Mike McNamara, Esq.

Michigan residents will be unable to fly within the United States or enter some federal facilities, nuclear power plants, or military bases beginning October 1, 2020 unless they have a REAL ID-compliant driver's license or REAL ID compliant document. REAL ID-compliant drivers licenses are marked with a gold circle with a star inside and are now offered in Michigan Secretary of State offices.

An enhanced driver's license and enhanced state ID cards are already REAL ID-compliant, as well as valid U.S. passports and trusted traveler cards that have been issued by the United States Department of Homeland Security.

When applying for a REAL ID-compliant driver's license or ID card, you will need to bring a valid U.S. passport or a certified birth certificate with a raised seal or stamp to a Secretary of State office. Some other forms of documentation may be accepted to verify your legal presence.
